Snow and ice, as well as prolonged freeze-thaw conditions, can all leave their mark. Paintwork can suffer from continued exposure to acids from the environment that accumulate in snow and slush. City and county road crews apply salt to the roads during prolonged snow storms, and much of this salt can end up on the paintwork of a car. Salt enters tiny cracks in the paint and, when combined with freeze-thaw action, can expand those cracks, especially if the it is going to be parked on the roadside for a prolonged period.

Sunshine

Bright sunlight can also be damaging on paintwork. Many modern paint finishes are resistant to ultraviolet light, but prolonged exposure still leaves paintwork looking dull and tarnished. High summer temperatures inside, caused by the greenhouse effect, also damage plastics and other interior materials.
